Paul Wong, PhD, Director

Dr. Wong has served as a consultant for various organizations such as American College Testing, the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control, and United States Public Health Service. He served as a Research Sociologist at the Survey Research Center, University of California at Berkeley from 1965-1969 and has published extensively on comparative racial and ethnic issues, Chinese studies, substance abuse, community and mental health, education, poverty and welfare, community studies, policy analysis, and social science statistics and methodology.


Cathy R. Cirina, MA, MPH, Manager of Operations and Development

Ms. Cirina directs all day-to-day operations of the SSRL and supervises all research projects from assessing clients’ needs through sampling strategy, instrument design, pilot testing, data collection, analysis, and preparation of final deliverables. Her background is in the social sciences and public health; she received an MA from UC Berkeley in 1989, and an MPH from SDSU in 1994. She has been working at the SSRL since 1994 and has extensive experience with project management, instrument design, programming and sample management, data analysis, and report writing. Ms Cirina is a member of ASRO (Academic Survey Research Organizations), CMOR, and AAPOR (American Association for Public Opinion Research), and currently serves as the Social Activities Coordinator for AAPOR’s Conference Operations.

Jeffrey Toor, Data Collection Manager/Project Manager

Mr. Toor joined the SSRL research team in 2000, and has worked as a trainer, supervisor, and lead supervisor. He currently manages the data collection branch of the lab and oversees all hiring, training, quality control activities, sample management, scheduling of interviewers and supervisors, daily monitoring of study needs, in-field progress reports and updates, and monitoring of interviewer productivity and quality statistics.

Jeff also serves as an SSRL project manager. In his role as a project manager he is responsible for developing the project plan, project documentation, timelines and benchmarks, communicating with clients regularly regarding project progress, designing and formatting survey instruments, programming web surveys, generating project deliverables, and serving as the SSRL liaison for his projects. Jeff is a member of both AAPOR and the American Evaluation Association.

Bri Hays, Products and Technical Assistance Manager/Project Manager

Bri has been an SSRL team member since 2005 and came to the SSRL with five years of experience in quantitative and evaluation research. She is currently pursuing her Masters of Science degree in Applied Psychology at SDSU. At the SSRL, Bri oversees product generation, including preparation of charts and tables to illustrate survey findings, reports of research results, and computer presentations highlighting key survey findings. Bri oversees SSRL’s Internship in Applied Survey Research, and trains and supervises SSRL student interns and research assistants in the product generation area. She has experience with a variety of graphing and desktop publishing programs and works with clients to customize products to best meet the needs of each individual project.

Bri also serves as an SSRL project manager. As a project manager, Bri is responsible for developing the project plan in cooperation with the client and SSRL Director, developing project documentation, timelines and benchmarks, communicating with clients regularly regarding project progress, designing and formatting survey instruments, programming web surveys, generating project deliverables, and serving as the SSRL liaison for her projects.

Bri is EMPAQ certified for 2007-2008, and serves as the official EMPAQ advisor for SSRL. Bri is also a member of both the American Evaluation Association (AEA) and AAPOR.

Nadine Misiaszek, B.A., Data Services Coordinator

Nadine provides consultation and expertise on the use of archived, machine-readable datasets and on-line information resources to students, faculty and staff; assists in searching for, downloading, converting and subsetting datasets; provides database support and programming in Microsoft Access for the college as needed; and provides presentations on topics concerning data as requested.

Lynn Garcia, M.A., Administrative Analyst

Lynn has been with the SSRL since 2000. She works with clients and their administrators, providing invoices and any back-up documentation. She is also responsible for assistance with administrative operations, fiscal and budgetary analysis and management, personnel administration and payroll processing.

Beth Bailey, Lead Supervisor

Ms. Bailey has been a member of the SSRL team since 1993. She has extensive experience with supervising telephone interviewers, training interviewers, facilitating pre-project briefings, monitoring, and quality assurance. She is bilingual and conducts monitoring and quality control in both English and Spanish. Ms. Bailey is also responsible for providing one-on-one feedback to interviewers on quality assurance issues and for overseeing interviewing and feedback-gathering activities during pilot tests.


SSRL Telephone Interviewers

The SSRL currently has 40 telephone interviewers on staff. Thirty percent of our interviewers are bilingual in English and Spanish, and we also have interviewers capable of conducting interviews in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Korean.
